This is a new pop-up event that brings the art to people in alternative places.

Coming to one of these events you will have a dose of the local artists of Sheffield, a vast variety of female DJs, eclectic music and artwork. Each time there is a new theme being introduced upon the night.

In March this year they hosted a circus themed night; with acts from the circus performing along the lines with a live reggae vocalist, dubcentral, Feedback, the Notts Collective, Inner City Techno and many more.

How they decorated the Redhouse, in Sheffield into something so arty was spectacular.

The décor was hardcore with creepy freakshow photos on the wall, ribbons dangling down from the chandelier, pretty fairy lights everywhere and generally looking like the inside of a circus tent.

The entertainment was endless!

An acoustic guitarist kicked off the night before DJs got everyone up on their feet dancing away to the beats.

There was UV stalls with UV artist Bonnie Stitch, poy making and dancing balls flashing away throughout the evening.

I caught up with the two main ladies who made this event happen: Char Smith & Jess Mosoph whom are both in their final year doing a MART fine art course.

"I am a creative whore and sound lover, art and music are my passion."

Even though by now we have a main idea on what Role.Play is but I know these girls have more up their art-ified sleeves so let’s dig.

Jess: "Role.Play is bringing art to galleries to alternative crowds. Artists who don’t exhibit usually to come out and show their art in a different space, especially outside of white cube space."

Char: "It is the music event side of ‘ArtSideOut’ which is a social art enterprise set up by Jess, myself and Rachel burns."

"Role.Play is an all-female DJ and art night with the intentions of curating art in alternative space and supporting local female DJs"

So why would these girls give up their own time to indulge in such an event that takes so much work to make sure it’s goes out with a bang.

Char: "Role.Play was initially set up with the desire to reach out to other female DJs in Sheffield, as I felt I hadn't met as many as id of hoped in the time I have been here.

I wanted to help create a community of women who love doing the same thing and give a platform to them and to artists of Sheffield."

"We are artists who are passionate about taking art out of the conventional gallery space and curating it in different ones."

Jess: "Everything that Char has said sums it up completely, wanted to do this to give females a chance to broadcast themselves and have a chance, we do also have male guests."

The name is great influence on this event and believe me it doesn’t involve Christian Grey or a red room.

Jess:"Char decided the name, switching roles with the DJing and playing elements amongst art."

Char: "The name comes from playing around with the roles of the DJ’s which in most events tend to be male dominated and also playing with the way people perceive art in different environments."

Finally, I hope we get to see some more amazing nights from Role.Play with even more exotic themes.

Char: "We’re planning our next event currently and want to take it outside. I think I can defiantly see Role.Play in a marquee on the moors at some point this summer."

Jess: "Big things are going to happen so keep your eyes peeled."

Looks like Role.Play is here to stay! In the meantime check out the video from their last event:
