Georgina Bond is the ex-president of the Pole Fitness society at Sheffield union and was one of the founders of this most glamorous society.

The society has been running since September 2012 and has been one of the biggest societies at Hallam ever since its first year.

In 2014 the society won ‘most improved society’ award and Georgina won 'best committee member of the year'.

Speaking with Georgina about the society, we found out why this society was brought up to be what it is today,

“Emily Mulholland came up with the original idea and I mentioned it to the activities officer of the union at the time and she put me in touch with Emily”

“We both thoroughly enjoyed it ourselves and noticed how it improved our body and therefore we wanted to open it up to a wider audience.”

"We wanted to create a society that allowed people to take part in a fitness activity that was fun."

As you may not know, men also participate in Pole Fitness and anybody – shape or size is most welcome to come and join in the fun.

“It’s a society that’s open to both men and women and pole dancing as a form of fitness is gaining a lot of popularity very quickly all around the world. Participants will not only improve their strength, but also confidence, dance abilities, and routine planning.

You don’t have to be really strong to start, any abilities can get involved. I mean look at Deb Roach, an award winning disabled pole dancer, who was born without most of her left arm!”

“I enjoy pole because it’s a lot more fun than going to the gym. It makes me feel confident and it works the whole body without you even noticing!”

“To be totally honest, you don’t need many skills to start off with, just probably the ability to place your arms and legs in the right place.

Over time you will build on skills like routine planning, freestyle, flexibility, and obviously build a lot of strength.”

“My strength has increased dramatically! I could actually see my muscles toning up and doing pole allowed me to see my biceps for the first time!

Although we focus a lot on the fitness around this activity, I think the biggest improvement I’ve seen is my confidence.

I’ve always disliked my body, but since doing pole, I don’t even think about those issues anymore."

A few years ago, you would never get me performing in front of a large audience in just shorts and a vest but since starting pole, I’ve regularly attended promotional events, performed in showcases around Sheffield and even competed in a national competition.”

Watching the pole fitness class was daunting at first, I literally thought “I can’t do that, I have no strength” but I was wrong, that is not what it is about.

As you can see from my own experience at giving this a go it is defiantly something I will be keeping up in my own time and hanging out with this society.

Even if you still believe you wouldn't be able to fit in with society, or even if you have them little nudges in your brain that is telling you to go ahead with it and see.

I would advise it is best to try this out at least once if you have thought about it. It is really incredible with what you can actually acheive, despite having any expereince or strength!

"Don't forget to point those toes."

If this sounds like a society you would like to join for the upcoming year.
